Petition for the Preservation of Student Choice

The Issue

By signing this petition, you are standing against UNT's Access Day 1 program and standing for the preservation of student choice and ability to easily save money, supporting local business, and maintaining fair competition.

In the fall of 2019, the University of North Texas will be implementing an initiative that will directly bill students' accounts for their electronic textbooks and course materials, severely limiting their right to seek a cheaper cost for their materials. This program, Access Day 1 (AD1), will severely inhibit students ability to shop at the location of their choosing without going through a strenuous opt-out process.

  • Students are automatically enrolled in AD1 if they are taking one of the 80+ pilot sections
  • While UNT claims that they have negotiated the cheapest price on these course materials, they have not confirmed with the local market to see if their products could be sourced cheaper
  • All course materials through AD1 are digital. Any student who wishes to have printed materials will be charged additional fees.
  • The sales of these course materials only financially benefit the University, Barnes & Noble (the on campus bookstore), and the publishers
  • The opt-out process is strenuous, and can only be done once the course is live in a students Canvas account in August, meaning the course fee will be billed to the students account before they even have the opportunity to opt-out
  • AD1 will negatively impact local businesses that currently serve University students
  • Without completing the difficult opt-out process, students will not be able to use service, price, or preference as qualifications as to where they choose to purchase their course materials
  • Outside of Access Day 1 there are already free trials of access codes and subscriptions provided by major publishers for those students in need of their course material on the first day of class
  • Instead of allowing students to choose to opt-in to this program, the University decided to make the choice for students to automatically enroll them without their consent
  • The University of North Texas has provided some information regarding AD1: affordability.unt.edu

Thank you for your support in our efforts to preserve student choice and ability to easily save money, support local business, and maintaining fair competition.
