In just one day, over 200 people have signed the petition that calls on UIC to enhance campus security after the tragic death of Ruth. To everyone who has signed the petition thus far, thank you. You are a pivotal piece to this movement. Education should be a safe space for all. Today, UIC’s chancellor responded to the murder, “The traumatic loss of life of one of our community members is very difficult to comprehend and surely invokes a range of emotions for all of us,” the statement continued. “ … As we mourn the loss of our student, I hope that this tragic event brings our community together to watch over and care for each other in the days and weeks ahead.” This is not enough. In upcoming weeks, our goal is to work with the chancellor to make the campus a safer place for students. We need you to stick with us, share the petition, and express your concerns. While this movement has stemmed from Ruth’s tragedy, this has ignited a much larger conversation about violence against women, particularly in higher education. A large portion of university women face violence at school, the statistics are staggering as instances go unreported. We call on UIC to be a leader for change in this epidemic.
