Dear UCT Alumni,
The upcoming UCT Convocation AGM tomorrow on Thursday, 5 December includes an alarming attempt to purge Council members based on their pro-Israel views. This motion seeks to force a new Council election with the explicit purpose of removing four individuals who don't align with anti-Israel agendas. While not binding, this represents a direct attack on academic freedom and democratic representation at our university.
The situation is even more troubling as many alumni were either:
- Not notified of the AGM at all
- Received late notification of the AGM
- Only received the agenda after registration had closed
You can still register to attend by emailing convocation@uct.ac.za immediately.
Immediate Action Required:
Please write to convocation@uct.ac.za demanding:
- Postponement of the AGM to allow proper alumni participation
- Reopening of registration for all alumni
- Removal of Motion 3, which seeks to illegally silence pro-Israel voices on the Council
In your email, also:
- Question why proper notice wasn't given
- Request an update to the alumni database
- Demand timely distribution of future agendas before registration deadlines
Your voice is crucial in protecting viewpoint diversity and preventing the political purging of Council members at UCT.
Yours in concern,
Concerned Citizens for Academic Freedom at UCT
