The University of British Columbia Chan Centre is preparing to hold a talk (organised by the 'Free Speech Club') by Stefan Molyneux and Lauren Southern on 16th March 2019. We are sharing this petition to demand that the proposed talk is cancelled at this campus venue. The Bruce Mason Centre in Auckland, New Zealand cancelled this same talk 6 months ago after protests against its white supremacist content and in 2018 the UK government banned Southern from entering the country on account of her inciting racial hatred. We ask UBC Chan Centre to honour the safety of its students, professors and visitors by following these examples.

Molyneux runs a podcast and YouTube channel - Freedomain Radio - promoting white supremacy and gender inequality. In his YouTube video (Oct 4th 2015), The Death of Europe - European Migrant Crisis, Molyneux states, 'blacks are collectively less intelligent' and when discussing the Holocaust in the video, Migratory Patterns of Predatory Immigrants (Mar 20th 2016), claims, 'a Jewish-led Communism had wiped out tens of millions of white Christians in Russia and (Germany was) afraid of the same thing'. Other YouTube videos are titled 'The Female Evil', 'The War on Tommy Robinson' and 'White Land Expropriation in South Africa'.

Similarly, Southern has written a book called How Baby Boomers, Immigrants, and Islam Screwed my Generation and has a YouTube channel with titles such as, 'Asking Feminists: Women's Rights or Islam?', and 'Why I Hate Pride Parades'. In her video, 'Traditionalism vs Freedom', she condemns images of intoxicated women and says, 'if this is what people consider being civilised, well then maybe they'd be better off joining a Papua New Guinean tribe who I'm sure would be happy to roll around in garbage with them' (All 2018 videos). If UBC welcomes Southern's racism towards Indigenous nations, then it dishonours the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam peoples who are our hosts here on campus.

These figures already have online platforms to spread divisive and damaging messages - UBC should not offer them another one. UBC has a responsibility for the safety of its community and hosting these speakers on campus goes entirely against that responsibility. This does not infringe upon the rights of the 'Free Speech Club' to meet these figures elsewhere. On campus, UBC must act in line with our rights for freedom against discrimination and put our safety first.
