Βoycott "Study UK November 2018 Exhibition” at Occupied Cyprus

The Issue

We urge the 19 (so far) Universities that will attend the "Study UK November 2018 Exhibition”, taking place at Merit Hotel in the Occupied area of Cyprus on 9 November 2018, to boycott the event and any other future events taking place in the illegal state of the so-called "North Cyprus".

The universities can still participate to the Exhibition that will take place in the non-occupied area of Nicosia on 10 & 11 November 2018, which is organised by British Council and will have 51 Universities attending.

These are:

  1. Βournmouth University
  2. Brunel University London
  3. Canterbury Christ Church University
  4. De Montfort University
  5. Keele University *(will attend only to Occupied Cyprus Event)
  6. Sheffield Hallam University
  7. Solent University
  8. The University of Northampton
  9. The University of Reading
  10. University of Bristol
  11. University of Central Lancashire
  12. University of Chester
  13. University of East Anglia
  14. University of Essex
  15. University of Leicester
  16. University of Plymouth
  17. University of Salford
  18. University of Southampton
  19. York St. John University

As "Metopo Cypriot Student Movement UK" we have already send the following email to all Universities on 18 October 2018. A Protest Letter was attached containing a  more analytical explanation on the current situation of the Cypriot Problem.

"   To whom it may concern,

We are ‘Metopo Cypriot Student Movement UK’, an autonomous and non-partisan movement of Cypriot Students all over UK Universities.

We are contacting you in regards to your University’s decision to participate in an  event in the illegal state of the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, on 9 November 2018. We would like to bring to your attention, that there is no such thing as North and South Cyprus or Turkish and Greek side. Cyprus is an independent country, member of the EU since 2004, that is occupied by Turkey, since 1974, when an illegal invasion by Turkey took place, leaving hundreds of thousands of Cypriots as refugees in their own country and thousands missing or dead. We urge you not to attend to this event taking place in a state which is not recognised by any charter of International Law or any resolution of the United Nations. We hereby attach our protest letter, in which we explain in detail why we strongly urge you to reconsider and we really hope that you take our arguments into consideration in making your decision.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention,

“METOPO Cypriot Movement UK” ’s Board           "
