Yesterday, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists advanced the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to global catastrophe, from 89 seconds. The Bulletin explicitly cited "significant escalations" due to competitive rivalry, criminality and animosity and a "global failure in leadership" of 'sovereign' nation-states as primary drivers for this shift.
If Doomsday was at the end of a downhill road over a cliff over a 1000 kms journey, at 23 hours, 58 minutes, 35 seconds, we are at the 999.02 km mark, just 80 meters away from a precipitous collapse, which is 99.90% of the total distance. We have thus moved 23 metres closer than at 23 hours, 58 minutes, 31 seconds last year, when we were at the 998.97 km mark.
Imagine how hard we need to brake on the downward slope on a heavy truck full of weapons of mass destruction and so much of industrial baggage that is wrapped around us by these greedy, selfish and power drunk megalomaniacs like Trump, Jinping, Putin, Modi and others. Did you consent to this suicide pact? Ask yourself!
The board of BAS however highlighted only some of the critical escalations :
Nuclear Hostility: The Bulletin pointed to increasingly aggressive behavior from United States of America, Russia and China.
Active Conflicts: Ongoing wars in Venezuela, Ukraine and West Asia and the early stage Civil War in America were identified as volatile flashpoints involving nuclear-armed states that heighten the risk of miscalculation.
Emerging Threats: The "unregulated integration" of artificial intelligence into military systems and the rise of synthetic "mirror life" in biotechnology were cited as new, rapid escalations that existing regulations fail to address.
Information Armageddon, where predatory technology and disinformation undermine the international cooperation needed to solve these crises.
