Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized by shelter personnel. Many people are so unaware of these statistics. Many people do not want to know as they do not want to recognize this huge problem that exists in our country. If you are an animal advocate, your life is impacted on a daily basis by the senseless killing of animals at shelters. Many are just babies, never having had a chance of living or having a family or home. The shelters kill animals regardless of their age or breed or health situation. This needs to change. We want our public officials to know that we have sat on the sidelines long enough for them to make the right choices regarding legislation to protect our animal population. Their decisions, or inaction, have cost the lives of millions of companion animals.
