In the United States, Giant African Land Snails (Achatina fulica) are illegal to own, because they are considered an invasive species. To the US Department of Agriculture, this snail is an issue, largely because of its size. As a result, a much smaller number of snails can eat a larger quantity of crops, harming agricultural production in the process. These animals average roughly 8 inches in length. The ban on ownership of these animals is unjust, considering that most other pets are not native to the United States, such as cats, dogs, hamsters, chinchillas, and nearly all species of bird, fish, or reptile. Even animals like the alligator and crocodile monitor are legal in some states (which can both cause significant bodily harm) but a non toxic, non venomous, leaf eating snail is considered too dangerous to be kept as a pet. In the United Kingdom, they are legal to keep as pets with a license, but if they are released, the former owner would be fined. If the United States were to implement a similar strategy, people who have bad allergies to animals, such as cats, dogs, hamsters, mice, rats, guinea pigs etc. would have access to a pet which they can interact with. They eat greenery such as lettuce and cabbage, and almost every vegetable and fruit (excluding citrus). If this petition get enough signatures, I will send a petition to the US Department of Agriculture.
