I LOVE otters! Squeaky and mischievous. Smart but affectionate. The honor of my life was to bond with the otters!
7 Otters have died on Babby Farms in 7 years.
7. They are currently on #8-11. Adult male Yang and Juveniles Pascal, Zhang and Zhi.
Food?
Otters at Babby Farms are fed mainly tilapia because it's cheap which wouldn't be so bad if their serving didn't get chopped to 1/3 of what it was. They now get 1 fish daily each.
One. Per. Otter. Growing otters would spend hours eating and foraging all day. Digging in the dirt for insects and munching on sticks for fun. Catching and eating fish as they wanted. They get shrimp and clams occasionally and some vegetables. And cat food. (Special blend to avoid kidney stones as a few have died from them.)
Enclosures?
Concrete. Plexiglass. Chain link.
No dirt. No grass. Nothing not man made. No bushes to scurry through just a harsh cold slab. Nothing soft for their feet. In fact, we had to slowly introduce the babies to the hot concrete. Their little toes would be bloody and chaffed when they were done. My shirt is still stained with bloody footprints.
Yang the lone adult male is improperly socialized and lives alone under a wooden apple crate terrified of everything. His run is a concrete slab with chain link. He will never touch the grass or run on dirt. He will never have a family unit or live under the sun. He will die there. Alone and under apple wooden apple box.
I could go into cause of deaths for the 7 dead. I'll say this instead "How many more?"
How many dead otters are too many? I pray to God not 8, 9, 10 or 11.
The otters have a special place in my heart. I poured my soul into those babies. I will be utterly devastated instead they die due to someone's greed.
I have bought/brought fish, toys, all sorts of enrichment things for them. I love them. They are my happy place in the world. I will do ANYTHING to see them in a place they can thrive. I will never stop fighting.
Help me save them!
I can hear their cries and I CANNOT do it myself.
