Get elephants out of zoos

The Issue

No zoo can recreate the conditions of the wild, especially for elephants, which usually live in herds of 8-100. Elephants can walk up to 50 miles a day in the wild, where an elephant in a zoo is confined to mere feet. For every elephant born in a zoo, on average another two die. Most elephants born in zoos die by age 23. Wild elephants can live to be 60 or even 70! At this rate, the elephants in zoos would be extinct in the next 50 years. I am tired of animals like elephants suffering in zoos and everyone keeping quiet about it. Many zoos in the United States still even use bull hooks, a sharp, painful tool used in the handling and training of elephants. I petition that zoos in the United States should not legally be allowed to hold these elephants in captivity any longer! Elephants should be phased out of zoos and relocated to animal sanctuaries, like PAWs in California, where the well being of animals is the focus rather than human entertainment. We should be focusing our efforts and money to bettering the environments of elephants that are still living in wild rather than trying to acclimate them to captivity, which is futile, especially since zoos do not intend to repopulate the declining elephant populations in the wild.
