Any child, disabled or not, should never be sexually exploited in order to "catch" another child who is considered sexually violent, in this case leading, horifiically and inexcusably, to the former child's rape. However, as disabled people, parents of disabled children and allies, we know that disabled girls and women experience sexual abuse in significantly higher numbers than do non-disabled girls and women. We are dedicated to understanding, preventing and fighting this abuse systemically, and to supporting disabled girls and women in healing and reclaiming agency following the abuse they have experienced.

Finally, it is not only inexcusable but a severe safety risk that any adults directly responsible for the exploitation and eventual assault of a 14-year-old girl should continue to be employed at any school--4 long years after the sexual abuse took place--and in close proximity to any other children at all. This must be rectified immediately through the immediate firing of Jeanne Dunaway from her new promotion, Principal Ronnie Blair, and any other culpable school employees. We understand that the DOJ has already been conducting its own extensive investigation and is holding the school employees responsible for the abuse in a case now being pursued through the United States Court of Appeals, 11th Circuit. Thus, we believe that evidentiary material already gathered and available for review will be all that is needed for Dr. Copeland and other school district officials to enact immediate, emergency staff changes that should have been made years ago.
