Nigeria’s economy is in crisis. The economy shrank by 1.8%, the steepest since 1983. At the end of 2021, the GDP will only approach the level of 2010, fully reversing 10 years of economic growth. High inflation and high youth unemployment exacerbate the crisis. The global demand for crude oil will progressively decline. Many of the constraints imposed in the wake of the COVD-19 pandemic will be permanent. Terrorist activities by state sponsored Fulani herdsmen killers and by the Nigerian armed forces have shrunk economic activities in southern Nigeria that will take a long time to recover. This economic crisis makes Nigeria vulnerable to an economic warfare.

The Yoruba Diaspora has the capability to wage a successful economic warfare against Nigeria. There are available economic means that they could use to reduce Nigeria’s international political power and undermine Nigeria’s ability - physical, financial, and technological - to conduct normal relations with other countries.

Any individual or group in the UK can make a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) to the National Crime Agency (NCA) about suspected money laundering or terrorist financing. The threshold for suspicion is low although the possibility must be real. It is a criminal offence in the UK to have the knowledge of wrongdoing and not disclose it. Disclosure can be made anonymously.

The types of evidence that might be adduced for money laundering might include the unexplained wealth of a government official or politician and their relatives. There are public officials and ex-public officials, for example, who have properties in London, the values of which far exceeded income from salaries. Some have children in schools and colleges where the fees paid cannot be explained by income from salaries alone.

The types of evidence that might be adduced for terrorist financing might include the UAE report naming government officials including Pantami as terrorist financiers. There are videos of Sheikh Gumi and other public officials handing over money to terrorists. There are public statements from government officials pardoning and paying terrorists when the due process of the law had not been engaged.

The SAR would include a request that the UK assets of the accused individual be frozen pending and during investigation. The freezing of assets is a particularly effective tool, and it causes the public official to suffer economic pain without injuring innocent people. Asset freezing is known to ease dictators from power or induce them to make policy changes. Indeed, it might encourage Yoruba politicians and elites to defect to the self-determination camp. Asset freezing is a method of economic warfare that will not adversely affect the British public or banking institutions.
