How I will break the self-determination impasse

How do we achieve self-determination when Buhari and his government will not play ball?  And when all Yoruba self-determination groups by their own actions tacitly admit that they are powerless? And, although the court judgment in the Igboho case confirmed that self-determination is a legal right in Nigeria, Section 6 (6c) and Section 308 of the infamous 1999 Constitution immunises Buhari and the individual state governors against legal action which could have been used to force them to act in that direction.

1.     Self-determination by proclamation
But who would do the proclaiming? A Yoruba Oba group (say of Alafin + OOni + Olubadan + Alake etc) could do it. If the Oba made the proclamation, their subjects would immediately follow. The Yoruba political class (governors or state assemblies) could make the proclamation. If they did, the people would support in droves. But neither group will do it because their horizon does not extend beyond their bellies. They have no vision. They live only for today! President Biden could do what President Bush did to facilitate the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, that is, he could define the criteria for the dissolution of Nigeria acceptable to the US but he will not do it because we are yet to attract his attention.

2.     Referendum
But who would conduct the referendum? The Nigerian government will not do it. Neither will the Yoruba governors. They know that given the choice, the Yoruba people would elect to leave Nigeria. The UN will not conduct a referendum in Nigeria, unless forced by circumstances, such as a total breakdown of civil society, because black lives, sadly but true, do not matter to that organisation! Two-thirds of the countries recently elected to the UN committee fighting human right abuses comprise of dictatorships! The US could force Buhari’s hands but would not do so because we are not America’s interest or priority. The British could force Buhari’s hands but would not do so because to do so would confirm the illegalities and horrendous mistakes perpetrated by their 1914 policy of ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’, which could open the door to legitimate compensation claims.

3.     Opinion poll
But who would conduct the polling? One of the self-determination organisations, such as, IlanaOmoOodua, could do it successfully for about a million Naira (£10,000). The objective of the survey would be to determine whether the ordinary Yoruba folk supports self-determination. A telephone survey using a properly structured questionnaire would capture the required information. A sample size of 500 adults per Yoruba state is enough to make the survey valid. To argue against the result of such a survey would require that the Buhari government conduct a rebuttal referendum! What are we waiting for? Let’s call their bluff. Let’s conduct an opinion poll.
