Your Excellency
We would like to respectfully elicit your esteemed help to avert a looming refugee crisis in Nigeria. As you know, Nigeria has a population of 200millions comprising of over 350 different and distinct ethnic groups. The Fulani ethnic group has been conducting ethnic cleansing and ethnic engineering, particularly in the south, with a view to making itself the dominant group in accordance with the instruction of their spiritual leader, Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto who said on 12/10/60: ‘The new nation called Nigeria should be an estate of our grandfather, Othman Danfodio. We must ruthlessly prevent a change of power. We must use the minorities in the North as willing tools and the South as conquered territories and never allow their future.’
The methods that the Fulani employ are barbaric, inhuman, and primitive. First, the Fulani use their herdsmen to attack farms. The herdsmen are members of an organisation called Miyetti Allah to which Buhari, the president of Nigeria belongs. The herdsmen open graze their herds to destroy the farmers’ crops. They use AK47 rifles and swords that they carry to kill unarmed innocent men, women, and children. Thereafter they dismember the dead bodies and display the severed heads as trophies. The Fulani herdsmen rape the women and girls, and make spouses, parents and children watch as they do so. They burn down villages. Where the local people are brave enough to apprehend these killers, they hand them over to the Nigeria police. The police in turn arrest and detain the local people and then let the Fulani killers go. The police are under instructions from the Buhari Fulani government not to apprehend the herdsmen. In other words, the government permits Fulani killer herdsmen to roam free unchallenged. Fulani killer herdsmen have made farming impossible in most areas of southern Nigeria, thereby causing food shortages.
Second, the Fulani use the Nigeria armed forces and police to attack any groups resisting the Fulani aggression. The Fulani have been responsible for 8 of the 9 military coups in Nigeria since 1966. The Buhari Fulani government has purged the military of officers of southern Nigerian origins. The government enlists into the army Fulani bandits, jihadists, and Islamic terrorists that they say have repented. The government uses Fulani elites like Sheikh Gumi to transfer government money to bandits and terrorists that they previously encouraged to kidnap school children for ransom. The bandits then use the money to purchase arms illegally. Open grazing of cows has been illegal in Nigeria since 1969, yet the Buhari Fulani government deploy troops to accompany and protect the Fulani herdsmen killers from local resistance. The government uses the air force to attack villages and towns particularly in Igboland. Those who flee into the forests are pursued and killed or abducted never to be heard of again. Those like the young men and women protesting police brutality at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, are simply gunned in defiance of international norms. The Buhari Fulani government sends assassination squads after activists like Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho.
It is hardly surprising therefore that people are fleeing Nigeria. There are several thousand Yoruba refugees currently in camps in neighbouring West African countries particularly in the Benin Republic. The refugees are being accommodated and looked after by Yoruba ethnic groups in those countries. The Yoruba ethnic groups in these countries are descendants of the old Oyo empire, which had extended along the breadth of the West African coast. Many of the Yoruba refugees are young, educated, and resourceful. It should not be long before they make their way to Europe and North America.
To prevent this exodus, we respectfully beseech that you advice President Buhari that the present situation is not acceptable; that he must immediately order the Fulani herdsmen to leave Yorubaland; stop military action in outhern Nigeria, which in any case, is illegal according to the case of Buhari v Obasanjo; and not obstruct self-determination for any group that wishes to exit Nigeria. Self-determination is an inalienable right enshrined in the Charters of the UN and AU. Self-determination has been lawful in Nigeria since 1983 following the enactment of The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Chapter A9. Mr Buhari himself supported self-determination for the Palestinians at the UN, and he has on occasions in the past threatened secession for northern Nigeria.
If Mr Buhari fails to do these things, we respectfully beseech the European Union to be firm and:
1) impose sanctions on Buhari personally, officials of his government, leadership of Miyetti Allah and Sheikh Gumi;
2) lobby to deny loans from IMF and other international lenders to the Buhari government;
3) lobby the UK and US to stop supplying arms and training to the Nigeria armed forces; and
4) support litigations at the International Criminal Court for genocide (being committed by Nigerian armed forces in Biafra), crime against humanity (being committed by Fulani herdsmen in southern Nigeria) and crime of aggression (shooting of unarmed SARS protesters and attempted assassination of Kanu and Igboho).
We pray that you would assist to make it possible for us to live peacefully in our own land. There is no mechanism within the Nigeria bubble to dismantle the Fulani hegemony. The only antidote is dissolution of Nigeria into the constituent nationalities. Yorubaland, in the west of Nigeria, for example, fulfils the 1933 Montevideo criteria for nationhood. Yorubaland meets the 1991 standards that President Bush set for recognising Soviet Republics. The Yoruba are more than capable of holding their own in Africa and in the world.
Respectfully yours
