Nationhood does not depend on size.

The division of Nigeria into ‘ethnic states’ means that each of Nigeria’s ethnic groups is compliant with the Montevideo Convention of 1933. The Convention stipulated that to become a state, a region must meet 4 requirements: a) a permanent population, b) a defined territory, c) a government, and d) the ability to form relations with other states. At least 20 member states of the United Nations have a population of less than 1 million people. Nigeria’s ‘ethnic states’ all have larger populations.
The small population size of some ethnic groups has shackled their leaders into believing that a united Nigeria offers protection. The creation of ‘ethnic states’ by the military, and adoption of presidential government, has inured them to the glaring failures of Nigeria as a unit. The current situation where one ethnic group has coerced and shot its way to dominance should open eyes. Your continued support for self-determination for the Yoruba of Nigeria is vital to the success of our campaign. Thank you.
