Today, we are calling on Haitian authorities to do a better job protecting Haitians from violence, because without safety there can be no lasting progress against cholera or any other crisis.
In 2020 and 2021, you signed a petition urging the UN to establish a dedicated fund for cholera eradication in Haiti. That fund never came, but Haiti, nevertheless, made remarkable progress: after going three full years without a single case, the country officially declared itself cholera-free in early 2022. But the disease re-emerged in October 2022, as severe fuel blockades, infrastructure collapse, and mass displacement deepened amid escalating gang control.
Today, cholera remains an active, endemic threat in Haiti. Although total numbers are lower than during the initial 2022 spike, localized flare-ups still appear during heavy rainy seasons and spread quickly through overcrowded, unsanitary displacement camps. In those places, gang violence often cuts off clean water, medical supplies, and treatment, making an already dangerous situation even worse.
This is why protecting Haitians from violence matters so much. People need safe access to water, health care, and basic services. Families need communities where they can live without fear. And those responsible for public safety must do better to prevent violence, restore order, and make it possible for people to stay healthy.
