9 Saudi Activists still remain in jail after being detained and charged with colluding with foreign governments and entities. Some of the activists still in prison include those who worked tirelessly to advocate for the lift of the driving ban. The Saudi Government started issuing driving licenses ahead of the lift of the driving ban — June 24th. Yet the activists directly responsible for fighting for this right for Saudi women are in jail and being silenced by the Saudi government. How can the Saudi government profess that they are working to modernise and ‘rebrand’ Saudi Arabia, and at the same turn detain human rights defenders who have worked to ensure those rights are implemented? We continue our call for the United Nations, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to hold Saudi Arabia accountable to free these imprisoned Saudi Activists.
