The University of Glasgow is renowned for being central to Gaelic and Celtic education, research and culture. However, recent years have seen the community of the Celtic and Gaelic department of the university severely weakened, as a policy of centralised timetabling from the university led to the lost of a community space with the Gaelic language at its heart. In order to restore students’ opportunities to speak their language and revive the vibrant community of students, lecturers, and staff living in their language from day to day, we are asking the university to return all Celtic and Gaelic classes to room 202, the main teaching room of the Celtic and Gaelic building; and we also ask that when not in use for teaching, the space be available for studying, meeting and socialising through Gaelic.
