L'Abbazia Glastonbury era uno dei maggiori santuari cattolici dell'Inghilterra.
Secondo una leggenda, essa sarebbe fondata da Giuseppe d'Arimatea, che sarebbe arrivato in Britannia nel 60 AD.
Ivi avrebbe piantato il suo bastone che sarebbe diventato la pianta di di biancospino, albero che esistito veramente e fioriva a Natale e a maggio, il mese della Vergine Maria.
A Natale, una spina veniva data alla Regina che la metteva nel per ornare la tavola natalizia.
Nel 2010, purtroppo, questa pianta è stata tagliata.
Si pensa che a fare ciò siano stati di gruppi ostili alla monarchia e alla Chiesa anglicana.
Sempre secondo la leggenda, l'abbazia sarebbe stata il luogo in cui sarebbe stato sepolto re Artù.
La sua tomba di troverebbe nel luogo in cui vi era l'altare della chiesa abbaziale.
Nel 1534, re Enrico VIII (1491-1547) decise di rompere con la Chiesa di Roma.
Nel 1536, iniziò la soppressione dei monasteri ad opera del Conte di Essex e Primo Ministro Thomas Cromwell (1485-1540).
L'abbazia venne soppressa nel 1539, anno in cui il suo ultimo abate Richard Whiting fu martirizzato, e fu spogliata di tutti i suoi beni.
Ora, io penso che l'UNESCO farebbe bene a dichiarare il sito come "Patrimonio Mondiale dell'Umanità"
Questo sito è oggi meta di pellegrinaggio delle tre maggiori confessioni cristiane, la cattolica, l'ortodossa e l'anglicana.
