Over the past 7 days more than ONE THOUSAND PEOPLE PER DAY have taken the time out of their day to sign our petition to Cheshire West & Chester Councillors, calling on them NOT to hand land and buildings above 'Britain's Biggest Amphitheatre', to developers for the next ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS. The current total of signees is 7, at the time of writing this.
The deal which would condemn any chance of uncovering Chester's Amphitheatre for the next five generations, until the year 2166, has also been slammed by over 61 local business leaders who came together to sign an OPEN LETTER on Wednesday to CWAC Councillors, the letter calls on them to recognise the HUGE POTENTIAL that an uncovered Amphitheatre would create for Chester, making the city a 'must-see' tourist destination. It also asks them to recognise and take on board the huge amount of public support for such a development. Whilst it may not be possible today or in the next few years given English Heritage's current stance, to condem the site for the next 150 years would surely be madness and would only benefit a profit driven developer and not the people of Chester, who have overwhelmingly spoken out that they want to see the Amphitheatre uncovered and turned in to the jewel in the crown of our city.
Supporters on Facebook have called for parts of the Amphitheatre to be rebuilt to create a 'Jorvik' like visitors centre, that the city can be proud of. The Jorvik centre in York celebrated it's 20 millionth visitor recently, since it opened to much national fanfare in 1984. This, supporters say is what Chester is missing and the Chester Amphitheatre is the perfect location for such a place.
