We would like to see civil society and all those who care about freedom of expression and independent media demand the Bangladeshi government unconditionally release Shaukat from prison. Shaukat was the elected president of the national press club of Bangladesh and the federal journalists union. Journalists: please raise this case and petition at your next NUJ meeting. Amnesty/HRW: please investigate the political detention of Shaukat and respond appropriately. UK Government: as a recipient of foreign aid please put pressure on the Bangladeshi government to demand that Shaukat is set free and that an independent media should be supported not stifled.
