Introduce a 'Kirstie's Law' deemed consent system of organ donation in England
The Issue
The demand for organs is outstripping supply because of advances in medical science.
Cases like that of Exeter's Kirstie Tancock, whose life was extended by two lung transplants, prove what can be achieved if organs are made available yet tragically too many people die while waiting for a transplant.
'Opt out' systems, which assume people consent to donate organs unless they specify otherwise, have been shown to be hugely effective in other countries and we would like a law passed so this system is used in England.
Sadly Kirstie died this year, aged 27, but she made the most of every extra day her operations provided her with.
Her family would like to emphasise that it's not just the recipient of a donated organ who benefits, but the family members who get to spend precious extra time with a loved one.
A 'Kirstie's Law' in her memory would give the gift of life to hundreds of other people in her position each year and allow families to spend extra time with their loved ones.
