Building support at Westminster for Interim Protection - contact your MP

I have had further conversation with the office of Marco Longhi MP, in whose constituency the recently demolished Crooked House pub formerly stood.

Marco is particularly concerned with the loss of pubs, and the impact this has on communities. He has brought the issue before Parliament, and requested that the government set aside time to debate measures that can improve protection for historic pubs. This request has received widespread support in Parliament.

Of course, not all pubs are necessarily suitable candidates for listing, and other measures are potentially available to protect them, including applying to register them as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). But the two issues overlap considerably, and Marco is keen to explore all avenues in which existing legislation can be improved. This includes the introduction of interim protection - which might potentially have saved the Crooked House.

To this end Marco is proposing to form a cross party committee of MPs to examine the issue, and champion new or amended legislation in Parliament. This is a measure I have been pressing for from the beginning of this campaign, and it is highly encouraging that this is now happening.

I have been invited to prepare and present a briefing paper to this committee, outlining the case for interim protection. I have also been asked to forward names of MPs who I believe might be willing to take actively support this.

So now is the time to email your MP and urge them to contact Marco Longhi.
