I was kindly invited recently to attend a meeting of the Joint Committee of the National Amenity Societies to discuss the petition. The JCNAS represents many of the major UK heritage organisations, including the SPAB, The Victorian Society, The Georgian Group, the Council for British Archaeology, and the C20 Society. Historic England's director of policy was also in attendance.
All were fully supportive of the campaign. Historic England have briefed the DCMS on the issue, and are assisting me in researching past incidents of destruction during listing, and compensation claims (if any) that have been made. In due course I will meet with the DCMS and HE to discuss specific proposals.
The campaign has put this issue back at the top of the agenda for HE, and it is important that we maintain the momentum to keep it in the spotlight. Please continue to share the petition, write to your MP's, and to the DCMS and HE.
This really does matter. Without this pressure the issue will inevitably slip back down the agenda - until another building is destroyed during listing.
