A signatory to the petition has very helpfully pointed out that a major review of planning law is currently being chaired by Rt Hon. Nick Raynsford. Comment is invited from all interested parties, but the deadline for comment is the end of October - next Tuesday. I will be sending a full and detailed summary covering the aims of the petition. But it would be extremely useful if as many individuals as possible could contact the review panel to advocate interim protection.
Suggested wording:
'The UK planning system continues to leave heritage assets of all kinds open to loss or damage while under consideration for listing. Many buildings have been needlessly lost over the years, including most famously the Firestone building in West London. A 2008 bill included measures that would have closed this gap in protection, but this was not enacted. However, Wales has now introduced interim protection from May 2017, combined with sensible measures to improve the process for owners. I believe there is an urgent need for similar protection across the UK.'
If you have had direct personal experience relating to this issue, it would be helpful to also refer to this in your response.
