Обновление к петицииEnd the liesThe Tech Bros can spread lies for profit. One law could stop them.

You helped us change the law on political deception. Now we need your help to take on the Tech Bros.

They are able to spread lies, hate and disinformation across their platforms, at scale, for profit, with almost no accountability. And as AI accelerates, the harm moves faster than any single law can chase it.

This week the Prime Minister announced a ban on social media for under-16s. It is a genuine step. But it does nothing about the lies and disinformation flowing past everyone else, the 17-year-old, the adult, the voter trying to make sense of an election.

There is one simple step the government could take that would change everything.

Platforms behave like publishers. They curate content like publishers. They profit like publishers. But the law refuses to treat them as publishers. That gap is a shield. It protects some of the most powerful companies on earth from the consequences of the harm they cause.

Close it, make platforms legally liable for what they publish, promote and profit from, and the lies that spread because they are profitable suddenly carry a cost.

We have done the seemingly impossible before. When we set out to make political deception against the law, people said it could not be done. We drafted the bill. Wales passed it. The UK led the world.

We can do the same with Big Tech. We have drafted that bill too.

When MPs, peers and academics sign a letter, government can read it and move on. When thousands of names sit behind it, it becomes much harder to ignore.
