Below are two images of two lakes side by side. One is Windermere the other Lake Annecy.
Both lakes are:
- glacially formed ✅
- over 10km in length ✅
- split into 2 basins ✅
- large populations ✅
- thriving tourism industries ✅
The difference? Well, the residents of Annecy noticed that their lake was dying in the 1960’s, with increases in algal blooms and declines in fish populations.
Guess what they did? They progressively invested hundreds of millions of euros, to transform Annecy into what it is today: a lake that is completely free from sewage.
No sewage is discharged into Lake Annecy, treated or untreated. Meanwhile our lake sees thousands and thousands of hours of sewage discharged into it year on year.
This is what we want.
We want our lake to be free from sewage and to be protected for now and forever. This is what Save Windermere stands for and we will not stop until we have secured this commitment from those responsible.
