UCL is currently planning to close the Institute Bar at the IOE temporarily, as early as the end of May, and then to move it into the much smaller cellar space beneath come September. Most of the current spaced used by the bar would be replaced with teaching rooms, and the social study area shrunk. Such a move would also threaten the prayer space presently beneath the bar and render the bar less accessible for wheelchair users. UCL clearly does not recognise the unique community of students, academics and staff we have at The Institute Bar; this atmosphere is not reflected anywhere else at the university and cannot be reduced into a tiny cellar space. This decision has been made by the university without a proper understanding of our bar and how much it is valued.
