Mandatory Removal of Child Locks in Uber Vehicles

The Issue

There is a rise in criminals taking advantage of the vulnerabilities inherent in the Uber business model. Predators use Uber driving as a means to gain access to vulnerable people, such as women under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Child locks remove the ability of Uber patrons to exit the car at their own will, leaving them at the mercy of the driver.

We request that all cars which are used by Uber employees be required by Uber to have all child lock mechanisms permanently removed by a licenced mechanic and to provide documentation of such, displayed on their car when on business, in order to improve the safety of Uber customers.

Other countries have implemented this safety measure, such as India. India understands the dangers toward women and other passengers when passengers cannot chose to exit a vehicle at their own will:

There is a notable rise in sexual assaults occuring in Ubers. A class action lawsuit was raised towars Uber due to a high rate of sexual assaults and other crimes, prompting Uber to install a 'panic button' on their app. However, cell phones are already equipped with 911 calling. If this were the solution, there would be change already. When we are put into a dangerous situation, we experience fight or flight. It is imperative to the human self defense mechanisms that we have complete control over our ability to exit a vehicle.

A college student was slain due to a murderer/rapist posing as an Uber driving, using child locks to maintain physical control over the victim. Although deceit was used to pretend he was the victim's Uber driver, it serves as an example of how a panic button isn't going to be enough. When faced with physical assault, rape, murder, we will not be reaching for our phones to initiate an Uber app in order to press a panic button. The panic button calls 911. Are we to fend off the attacker while doing all of this?! Rediculous. It's a cheap bandage. People need to be able to exit all Uber vehicles at their own will.
