The Context Page for the Counter Letter, and Joseph Boyden

Hello Everyone, We are at more than 440 signatures and given what happened today, it's a good thing the counter-letter is still open. I have made a context page for the website (link below) and am putting resources up there as the controversy continues. The complainant at UBC broke her silence today and corrected what Galloway said happened. It's pretty clear that UBC Accountable (a web site where the domain is deliberately masked) is shadowy. What is behind all this? We still don't know. Joseph Boyden wrote a piece for the Walrus that struck out at us, among others, who are trying to bring visibility to the rape culture aspect of this controversy and say that women who came forward matter. Carmen Aguirre's piece for the Walrus deeply saddened me. Boyden's statement for the Walrus tried to criticize young Indigenous women speaking. In a leaked email, he scolded those activists, and invoked the campaign to bring visibility to the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women as what they "should" work on. All this marked a new low in the controversy, and Indigenous women with allies fought back. Atwood, in my opinion, is not operating rationally in the Twitterverse, and is trying to divert attention from UBC Accountable by supporting the water protectors. It's shameful. What should we do? Those of us not in positions of precarity should support those who are. Those who can and want to fight should fight, because I think this is the time to stand against such sexist, racist and neo-colonial accusations and to keep bringing focus back to the female complainants and all those survivors affected by what is going on. It's pretty clear that CanLit needs to change, and become more open to all kinds of voices, for real. Respect for those who keep withdrawing their signatures from the Galloway letter. Respect to those who keep signing the counter-letter and who are standing up. Respect to all of you. Regards, Julie Rak
