Smart for Businesses and Affordable Too!

My brother sent me a message after posting this petition telling me the name of the "poles" I am asking be used to block vehicles from parking in the "access lane" of van accessible spots. They are called "bollards." And guess what. They're CHEAP. By googling "bollard" I've found ones for as low as 52.96. Here's a description of one: "The heavy duty steel welded construction makes these traffic bollards ideal for protecting personnel, racking and machinery indoors or out. Topped with a removable rubber cap, bollards can be filled with concrete for reinforcement High visibility yellow powder coat finish This style is designed to be installed underground or poured into place in fresh concrete." Not only are bollards inexpensive, a couple of people have pointed out that you wouldn't really need four of them, as I suggested in my original post/diagram. Strategically placing one near the front (as in the opposite end from the handicapped parking sign) center of the access aisle, would adequately block cars from being able to park on top of it, and still allow wheelchair to maneuver around the bollard. Even more cost effective would be place TWO van accessible spots beside one another with the access aisle between so that both can use it, if one parks frontwards and the other backwards. Still, only one bollard would be needed to make this doable. OR, as my boyfriend suggested, you could place the handicapped van accessible parking sign, with two arrows pointing outwards at the spots, in the same exact position, and you wouldn't even need a bollard! (See the image) Finally, it would be helpful for small business owners because people with disabilities LOVE businesses that show they are trying to be inclusive of them and are putting in an effort. In other words, "if you build it, they will come." Not only that, but there are tax incentives - such as a tax credit and tax deduction for architectural/transportation related expenses - for a business being ADA compliant. Truly - Everyone! Remember, this petition is just to change ADA requirements for van accessible spots to provide for some kind of physical barrier to make it impossible for people to park on top of access aisles - which barriers or how it's engineered we don't care. Congress can just pick one. Meanwhile, we're on a roll! Almost 200 signatures! Keep on sharing!!
