Remove Christopher Columbus Day as a federal holiday
Remove Christopher Columbus Day as a federal holiday
The Issue
"In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue." This is the tune we are taught in grade school. Seldom, if ever, are we taught the truth about Christopher Columbus. He was not the first to discover America, although many believe him to be. He killed, raped, pillaged, and helped enslave thousands of natives of the Caribbean. We, in school, learn about African-American slaves, but rarely do we ever learn about Native American slaves. The holiday itself is offensive to people with roots tracing back to the native tribes of the Caribbean. Having this holiday exist is equivalent to having a holdiay celebrating the life of leaders of the KKK. Removing this holiday that supports a false pretense will prevent an entire group and culture of people to feel inferior and suppressed.
