Dear Supporters,

The included image was posted by one of our members.  It shows a blub from Consumer Reports.  Jennifer Stockburger is the Director of Operations at the Consumers Reports' Auto Test Center.  Her advice to you is, "Look away and down toward the right side of the lane until the brighter lights pass."

I have spoken to Jennifer Stockburger about LED headlights on the phone.  I have written to Jennifer Stockburger and CEO Marta Tellado dozens and dozens of times over the past few years.  I have explained to CR that the reason why LED headlights are blinding people is because NHTSA has almost no limits on intensity and no limit on blue wavelength light.  Yet, Consumer Reports has taken no steps to join our effort to solve the LED headlight crisis and their recommendation to you is to not look at the road while driving.

Here are few responses from some of our members to Jennifer Stockburger's advice:

"The problem is constantly put on the drivers instead of the manufacturers. Typical bs. Cancel your subscription to Consumer Reports Magazine. It's obvious they aren't for the people so they aren't trustworthy any longer."

"They're trying so hard not to mention how damaging they are to the eyes..."

"And meanwhile you are not looking ahead to see the flow of traffic, traffic control devices or seeing road obstructions, pedestrians or animals. Yeah, great solution   Regulate the d*mn lights!"

"Ignoring the underlying problem... SMH."

"Same old; same old. Blame the victims; deflect responsibility from the corporations, engineers, regulators, and the products themselves."

"Ya this is a joke ... I was told about looking at the outside line when normal headlights were oncoming ...not quasars"

Consumer Reports supposedly has 6 million subscribers and, according to the taglines on their website, "Dedicated Experts. No Corporate Influence.  Here to Fight For You."  Let's write to Consumer Reports and tell them that their reputation takes a major hit when they simply spread industry talking points and don't tell the public the truth about LED headlights.  Tell them to "fight for you" and write to the US House Energy and Commerce Committee in support of of Representative Mike Thompson's request that the committee hold a hearing on LED headlights with NHTSA officials.

Jennifer Stockburger (jennifer.stockburger@consumer.org).  Marta Tellado (marta.tellado@consumer.org)

Sincerely,

Mark Baker
