Some of you who have visited the petition may have wondered why two guys are urging the name of Fort Hood to be changed to Fort Oveta Culp Hobby. Let’s start with what we are not. We are not related to the Hobby family, former U.S. Army veterans (Alan is an Air Force vet and the furthest I got was two years of Army ROTC), and brothers despite the similarity in our first and last names. We are two guys from western New York State (I am from Buffalo and Alan is from Gowanda), friends who met because our wives taught together in Plano, Texas, we are both authors as you might have gathered from the signatures on the petition, we both write about the Army (I write about the American Civil War and Alan writes about World War II), and both interested in overlooked heroes (I am interested in Major General Charles Ferguson Smith and Alan wrote about Major General James A. Ulio) The roots of this petition are in a blog I wrote titled “What-About-Post-1865-Heroes?” Alan liked the post, did some additional research, and learned about Killeen, Texas native Oveta Culp Hobby. We thought to name the post in Killeen after her was very appropriate. Based on Alan’s previous accomplishments in honoring forgotten/overlooked veterans, he suggested we campaign to change the name of Fort Hood to Fort Oveta Culp Hobby.
