Thank you to the more than 150 people who have signed this petition and to the neighbors who continue advocating for a safer crossing at Cherokee Street and Archer Place. Your concerns deserve serious attention.
Our office has been working on this intersection for more than a year. In 2025, after a constituent asked us to help appeal a denied four-way stop request, we followed up with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) to seek reconsideration and explore safety improvements.
DOTI explained that its initial denial was based on the existing four-way stops immediately north and south of this intersection. Staff cited concerns about “stop fatigue,” explaining that the department generally avoids installing all-way stops at three consecutive intersections.
In our follow-up conversations, a DOTI staff member indicated that the department would reevaluate the intersection in light of the park renovations and surrounding density. We were also told that additional pedestrian improvements, including enhanced crosswalk signage, were being considered. Our office has continued following up on those discussions.
The experiences shared in this petition underscore why that reevaluation matters. Families accessing Dailey Park and Spruce School, seniors and people with disabilities traveling from Hirschfeld Towers, and neighbors walking, rolling, and biking to La Familia Recreation Center need a crossing they can navigate safely.
We will bring this petition to DOTI and request an update on the promised reevaluation, including whether a four-way stop will be reconsidered, what other improvements are being evaluated, and a timeline for next steps. We will share that response with the community.
Residents can also report specific visibility problems, near misses, and crossing concerns through 311. Those reports help document current conditions and supplement the concerns already raised.
Thank you for organizing and sharing your experiences. Making this intersection safer remains a priority for our office.
