Marie Claire started this petition to Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad

Iranian lawyer and women's rights advocate Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced by an Islamic court in Teheran to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes. "Conspiracy", "incitement to corruption and prostitution", "propaganda against the system", disruption of public order", "espionnage", multiple indictments were brought against her.

And yet what did she do wrong, this female lawyer, who received the Sakharov award for free thought in 2012? She pacifically defended Iranian women who were taking their headscarves off, as a way to protest the law which required them to wear one. Supreme irony: as Nasrin Sotoudeh sits in jail, Iran has just been nominated to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

In the name of all the values we have always defended – equality between men and women, women's emancipation, freedom of expression, freedom of conscience – we, Marie Claire Malaysia as well as many of our International editions, demand Nasrin Sotoudeh's unconditional release.
