All of the incredible pressure and hard work you have contributed to has paid off! Yesterday, TripAdvisor made me aware of more new features on their platform that focus specifically on the survivor experience and making reporting easier. Here are the changes that the company has made since we launched this petition in March:

  • Developed an FAQ that provides tips on creating an anonymous profile, translated into 28 languages
  • Committed to guiding survivors who reach out by phone or email through the process of creating an anonymous profile
  • Developed a safety filter that will allow travelers to more easily see reviews that include significant health and safety concerns, including sexual assault
  • Committed to having content leadership and the customer support team participate in a sexual assault survivor awareness training with the formidable organization NO MORE

I’ve reviewed all of these changes and I can confidently say that had they been in place when I went to report my own attacker, they would have made a significant difference for me as a survivor. With these updates, TripAdvisor has shown that they are committed to both improving the experience for survivors and providing people with the information they need to travel safely. I’m thrilled to declare our campaign a victory.

I want to give special recognition to Rossalyn Warren at The Guardian who wrote the investigative piece that launched this petition. Without her work to track down 40 reviews from other survivors, I don’t think we’d be celebrating a victory today. Also, special thank you to Christine, a survivor who put her face and name in Rossalyn’s article – she did what I couldn’t do.

The 693,000+ signatures on this petition proved to TripAdvisor that people were invested in a better, safer version of their site. And thanks to all of you, more women and survivors will be able to travel the world without taking unnecessary risks. And that’s the world we’ve all been fighting for.
