I wanted to warn others
Mar 18, 2019 —
Since starting this petition I’ve received such an outpouring of support from people who understand how concerning TripAdvisor’s approach to sexual assault allegations has been. I’ve also received a lot of questions around what responsibility TripAdvisor has in this situation, and why they need to be held accountable to do better.
I believe that regardless of how a victim chooses to pursue justice against their attacker or the business that hired him, as the world’s largest and most trusted travel site, TripAdvisor has an obligation to warn its users about violent people. However in my case, TripAdvisor may be my only chance to protect others from my rapist.
I was sexually assaulted while traveling in the Horn of Africa, a region where it is notoriously difficult to prosecute anyone through the justice system. Even knowing this I did everything possible to bring him to justice. I hired a lawyer, brought in multiple witnesses with translators, and underwent several interviews myself. I endured a humiliating and invasive medical examination, and even plan to fly back to the country where it happened to manage my ongoing legal case.
I have done everything, but I have to accept that there is only a small chance my attacker will ever be held accountable by his government for what he did to me. I might not be able to stop him from attacking other people, and now TripAdvisor won’t let me warn people who are considering hiring him as a tour guide. In fact, after several of my friends left poor reviews for his business, the site suspended all reviews on his page.
TripAdvisor silenced me in an effort to protect my rapist.
