The Uluru Statement of Hope

“We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.” (Uluru Statement 2017) I'm inspired to continue educating myself and others on the benefits of a treaty for Australia's Indigenous people. There is now momentum for change, and the combined effect of petitions, actions, protests, is starting to be noticed. I am updating the wording of my petition in an effort to reflect the values and wishes of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. I also call up on all Australians to make their voices heard and sign the petition so that our federal politicians cannot ignore its constituent’s wishes. Indigenous people, our First Nations people, need full and equal rights under the Australian Constitution and a Treaty on their terms. We are calling for the Australian parliament to: * Ratify The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and to put a Treaty with Indigenous nations on the agenda of Australia's parliament. * Open-heartedly approach Treaty talks as a way forward in the healing and progress of Australia's First people towards self-determination. The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples affirms the minimum standards for the survival, dignity, security and well-being of Indigenous peoples worldwide and enshrines Indigenous peoples’ right to be different. The Declaration was adopted by the UN September 2007 and the Australian Government announced its support for the Declaration in 2009.
