Today, the LSO announced the following on Twitter:
“Change is coming! We’re working to create one dedicated gender-neutral space for all barristers to robe & network in what’s now the men’s robing room. Modifications are needed to support personal privacy in the washrooms. Once complete the space will be open to all.
We are working out specific plans and timelines. Please stay tuned for updates as we work to ensure robing & networking facilities are inclusive & welcoming. In the meantime, please continue to respect people’s privacy.“
The speed with which the LSO has addressed the Robing Room disparity - a clear, representative example of exclusion and systemic inequality - is very encouraging. It also bodes well for the potential for further progress on issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion in the legal profession.
Thank you to everyone who signed the petition for your support! This could not have been a success without your enthusiasm and commitment to catalyzing change.
