Transforming Road Space into a Community Place!

To celebrate international PARK(ing) Day, our community is coming together to temporarily transform local road space into a vibrant, welcoming public parklet!

  • Where: Cnr Darley St and King St, South Newtown.
  • When: Saturday Sept 19th to Sunday Sept 20th 2026.

This community-organised activity aims to demonstrate how a modest reallocation of street space can improve pedestrian safety, support local businesses, and add a little more life to our streets.

What to Expect
We are turning a standard parking space into a welcoming green oasis where you can stop and meet your neighbours. The temporary parklet will feature:

Comfortable spots: Tables, seating, and umbrellas to relax under.
Greenery: Hay bales and plants to bring nature to the street.
Safety measures: Bollards and practical barriers to clearly and safely define the space from traffic.

The Bigger Picture: People-First Places
We want to use this weekend to spark a broader community conversation. Could a permanent, Council-supported footpath widening or parklet work in this location? We believe it can!

Come Say Hello!
While this is a community-led initiative rather than a Council project, we would be thrilled if you came down to see the space in operation and meet the residents and local businesses involved.

We hope you can drop by and help us reimagine our streets!
