Stop Darebin’s Proposed Parking Restrictions

The issue

Darebin City Council are proposing to introduce 2 hour parking limits for all our streets, shown in the map sent to residents (see photo).

The proposal will restrict all affected residents from parking on their street and limit visitors and the people who try to use our wonderful amenities. Visitors permits would only be available for a month. It will disadvantage larger families, shared households, older residents, community connectedness and impact on us all. This is a bad idea and we need to unite to show them that we do not support this proposal. Sign the petition attached to tell Darebin Council you object to this proposal.

Responded
I agree! Darebin City Council identified Elizabeth Street as a significant pedestrian route as part of the Walking Strategy adopted by Council in 2018. This means that it is identified as a significant route for people walking and we want to encourage people to do so. However Council is not in charge of Elizabeth Street. The road between Murray Road and Bell Street is an arterial road, under the care and management of the Victorian Government through the Department of Transport. Therefore, installation of any pedestrian crossing on this section of Elizabeth Street would require approval and funding from the Victorian Government. Council is not able to install one on its own. It would also involve the City of Moreland in any discussions, as the road is a boundary between us and Moreland. I’ll write to the State Government asking for a crossing on Elizabeth Street given the high numbers of pedestrians using the road. Cr Susan Rennie Mayor City of Darebin
