Transform the Bottineau LRT into a Modern Streetcar

Transform the Bottineau LRT into a Modern Streetcar
The Issue
I've heard potential concerns about the Bottineau LRT (METRO Blue Line Extension). These range from increased traffic and pedestrian issues within the community to displacement of residents in Northwest Minneapolis. The projected cost overruns and environmental impact of the project have also imbued a sense of unease amongst locals.
Converting the Bottineau LRT into a modern streetcar would address these concerns while still providing the essential public transportation the corridor needs. Streetcars have the flexibility to share the road with traffic and travel on their own right of way.
The cost overruns on the Bottineau LRT, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars, are a burden on local communities. On the other hand, streetcars would offer cost-effective construction and operation, with many U.S. cities reporting costs significantly below that of light rail (source: Federal Transit Administration).
I'd still like to see the METRO Blue Line get extended, but I think an extension to Medina via Olson Memorial Highway (Minnesota State Highway 55) is the better solution. This is because the corridor is wide enough to accommodate light rail infrastructure.
In summary, a modern streetcar would address concerns regarding pedestrian and traffic safety, displacement of residents, cost management and environmental impact while simultaneously offering a efficient, economical, and eco-friendly approach to urban transportation. Your support can make a difference. Sign the petition to urge our local decision-makers to consider this alternative.
