Thank You all for helping us reach 100k signatures.

Although Trader Joe's has agreed to reduce their plastic packaging, I think they can do even more.

Here is the email I just sent to Nicole High, Director of Customer Relations Communication at Trader Joe's:

Hi Nicole,

My name is Elsa Clements and I created a petition on to ask that Trader Joe's reduce their plastic packaging.

A whopping 100,000 people have now signed this petition, asking TJ's to take action.

I was happy to read your announcement on packaging improvements and hope that you will continue to work to eliminate plastics in your stores.
Change is never easy, so know this will take some time, but am happy that TJ's is striving to improve.

My hope is that TJ's will be a leader in the grocery industry and encourage other companies to follow your lead.
TJ's works direct with suppliers for your TJ's branded product, so you have the power to change packaging on many products.

I have been a loyal shopper for over 20 years and would gladly pay an extra .10-.25 cents to have those cookies in a cardboard box instead of the plastic clamshell. Here's some other suggestions for changing your packaging:

Get rid of produce packaged in multiples (ex: 2 cucumbers sold in a plastic clamshell) and sell them loose in bulk instead.

Sell reusable produce bags which can be placed next to the compostable bags in your produce section.

Set up a new section where customers can buy candy/nuts/flour/sugar/pasta/spices in bulk (using reusable bags or glass jars) instead of plastic packaging.

Find a new solution to pre-packaged salad kits. Can TJ's take the lead to be the first company to use sustainable plastics made from seaweed?

Use compostable cardboard for any herbs/plants you sell.
Switch to glass jars for any pre-made sauces/salsa/dips, etc.

Reach out to LOOP and see if they can partner with TJ's on a reusable packing system.

If TJ's is able to implement these changes, you will be the first major grocery chain to do so.

By taking the lead, You will win the respect and admiration of your loyal shoppers who are already sustainable minded, and will gain many more customers by the positive PR.

I would be happy to discuss my petition and ideas further over the phone or in person.

Kind Regards,

Elsa Clements
