Dear Supporters,
More great news! Our campaign is now officially supported by The Twentieth Century Society (www.c20society.org.uk), who are generously producing leaflets for distribution along the Mile End Road, where we'll be raising awareness of the campaign among local residents and businesses. I'll post details later this week and hope some of you will come along and support this stage of our campaign.
While the number of supporters crowd daily we have a tough time ahead, and a real challenge. The developers planning to destroy the Spiegelhalter facade and replace it with a glass box have a very different view of the site. They say:
“The attractiveness and uniformity of 69-89 Mile End Rd is only marred by 81 Mile End Rd which is inferior in terms of appearance, detailing and architecture.”
To which we say: nuts. 'Marred'? Inferior'? Only a property developer could so completely fail to recognise and value the significance of Spiegelhalter's - not just a great architectural joke but a unique symbol of resistance. It's also, if income is the main consideration, a potentially significant earner as a refurbished shop or office with particular appeal to the small, independent trader - a revenue-generating site in a much-loved landmark building. Better, surely, than a soulless glass atrium?
Spread the word - SAVE SPIEGELHALTER'S!
All the best
David
