COME ON FELLOW SAXON ALUMNI AND FRIENDS, LET'S RALLY TOGETHER TO GET THIS DONE! SHOW YOUR SUPPORT BY SIGNING THIS PETITION! THANK YOU!
We, the North High Alumni Association, would like to see the name of the North High Saxon Football Stadium changed to the Steve Schmitz Stadium. There are plenty of Alumni that would like to see this happen. I know that there is tremendous support from all of his former players and the rest of our Alumni. Please consider making this change so that Coach Schmitz can be honored at the Saxon Stadium that he loved so much. Join us in signing this petition so that we can show the Torrance Unified School District just how many Saxon Alumni support this happening! The Daily Breeze said it best back on 10-20-15:
"Schmitz graduated from North High in 1966. He was a three-sport athlete, excelling in football, track and field and wrestling. Schmitz was an All-CIF Southern Section selection and team MVP in football his senior year. He moved on to play at El Camino College and was apart of the 1971 state title team before accepting a football scholarship to Weber State in Ogden, Utah.
After graduating from Weber State, Schmitz headed back home and took a job with the Torrance Unified School District. He taught physical education at North High for 40 years, was also the P.E. department chair and coached football, wrestling, golf, track, basketball and baseball.
During his 11-year football coaching tenure at North, from 1975 to 1985, he had an overall record of 96-34-6 and won six league championships, went to the playoffs nine times and had 17 All-CIF players. Schmitz’s 1983 football team reached a CIF championship game, and he was an assistant coach on the 1976 North baseball team that won a CIF title. Wherever he went, he won.
Schmitz died the morning of the North-West football game, won by North 35-17 to improve to 6-1.
“Especially with the passing of Steve Schmitz today, I think the whole community wanted this win,” North coach Todd Croce said after the game.
When Schmitz became the head track and field coach in 1978, he won five league championships. He also was the North High wrestling coach from 1985 to 1990, compiling an overall record of 66-30. He had three wrestlers win CIF-SS individual titles and five individuals qualify for the CIF State Meet.
Schmitz also put a lot of time and effort into North High’s weight room over the years.
“He was an invaluable guy to the development of North Torrance High athletics,” Croce said."
