Bayview Extension Speed Limit - Keep our roads safe!

Don't increase the speed limit! Recently the speed limit on the Bayview Extension south of Pottery Road was reduced from 60kms/hr to 50kms/hr increasing safety for drivers and cyclists using this busy corridor. This stretch of the Bayview Extension south of Pottery Road down to the bottom of the extension was posted at 70kms/hr for at least 40 years resulting in multiple senseless fatalities. In 2012, the speed limit in this area was reduced to 60kms in recognition of the risks associated with high speed traffic. Currently, there is a designated bike lane in both directions for cyclists which combined with the lower speed limit has significantly increased safety. As such, there appears to be no logical reason to reverse that decision and increase the speed limit. Although it was challenging to maintain the speed limit of 60kms/hr while travelling southbound on a downhill grade leading to excessive speeding it is now easier for drivers to control their speed and break properly with the 50kms/hr speed limit. This petition is to request Toronto City Councillors put the safety of citizens first and ignore any request to increase the speed limit.
