The Cleaners at the Daily Mail - most of whom are from Latin America and Africa and members of the trade union United Voices of the World (UVW) - are paid the minimum, poverty wage of £7.50 per hour. They asked to be paid the London Living Wage (LLW) of £10.20 per hour which would allow them to meet an acceptable standard of living in the capital, including an adequate level of warmth and shelter, a healthy palatable diet, social integration and avoidance of chronic stress. In other words, the LLW would enable them to live and work in dignity. Instead of agreeing to the cleaner's demands to be paid a living wage or agreeing to sit down and talk to their union UVW, the Mail decided instead to send in the manager of their contractor MITIE to threaten to sack all the cleaners if they ever strike. That threat was in gross violation of the cleaner's trade union and human rights. Please support if you can! Thank you!
