The respective Maltese Bee-keeping Associations are requesting the Maltese Government to safeguard the Maltese honeybee species (Apis Mellifera Ruttneri) by adopting the measures that are available for his disposal.

The safeguarding of the Maltese honeybee can be achieved by immediately stopping further importation of alien honey bee species from foreign EU and non EU countries, by reducing the ample, excessive amounts of pesticides used in every corner of our island. 

Nearly one-third of the world's crops are dependent on honeybees for pollination, but over the last decade the black-and-yellow insects have been dying at unprecedented rates!

If such actions are not implemented immediately, our Maltese honey bee will be extinct in such an alarming little time! 

"The bottom line is, if something is not done to improve honeybee health, then most of the interesting food we eat is going to be unavailable."
