At 8:00 on a Tuesday night, Junaid Masood is constantly monitoring his phone and computer for messages alerting the community to suspicious activity. He is a member of just one of the community patrol groups that have sprung up around Melbourne in response to the dramatic increase in carjackings and home invasions that has hit the city's western suburbs. We all are up, our phones all on keeping an eye on things. "We get a message if someone notices anything suspicious. The patrol car near goes there and we observe. "If it's something suspicious going on we just call triple-0 immediately." "Since the last couple of weeks we couldn't sleep, every night we wake up and I go to the windows and see is there anyone outside," he said. "For the protection of my family I need to be careful and extra ready if something happens."
